scfrankles: knight on horseback with lance lowered (knight)

Well, as my country continues to go through Interesting Times (is it possible to claim political asylum and take out citizenship of the internet?), writing about my hobby does seem a bit trivial at the moment ^^” But still, here’s a round-up of what I’ve been up.

I posted my completed [ profile] heroinebigbang Dear Ladies fic at the beginning of June. The big bang has actually sparked back into life, and there might have been a chance of getting art if I’d hung on. But to be honest I was getting fed up with the fic and wanted to post it and move on--clear the decks for July. It’s not brilliant but I think it tells a coherent story and there are bits of it I’m very happy with. I’m pleased with it as a first attempt at something that length. And Okapi tells me she didn’t have to be drunk to read it, so I’m counting it as a win! (:P)

And there’s been [ profile] holmestice, of course. There were negatives and positives for me. My recipient had to drop out and perhaps understandably didn’t take part in any of the commenting--which included not commenting on my fic. These things happen in exchanges and I do understand more important things can crop up in real life. But it was a bit of an anti-climax. However, I was happy with the fic (Dust and Ashes) and I got several really lovely comments on it, so I’m not complaining.

I certainly can’t complain about my gift fic. It was perfect for me. There was a disconcerting moment when I first started reading it, when I wondered if Small Hobbit had jumped in as a pinch-hitter. I did quickly realise it couldn’t be by her (not truly her style--and also US spelling) but the contents of the fic do lie bang in the centre of the Venn diagram of silliness where SH and I overlap. If you want to take a look, it’s Mrs. Hudson’s Unique Tenants by [ profile] piplover. It’s very funny and full of warmth for the characters. I love it.

A few more recs:

My favourite fic was Art in the Blood by [ profile] rachelindeed. This has as its source the film Murder By Decree, and the fic carries on from where that ends. For those who haven’t seen the film (I haven’t myself), in her notes Rachel gives a summary of the plot. Obviously both notes and the fic itself constitute huge spoilers for the film but I have to say I was left wanting to see it, rather than thinking there was no point watching it now. Anyway, in her fic Rachel introduces a canon character who didn’t make an appearance in the film--Mycroft. He is at a crossroads in his life and we follow him as he makes decisions as to what he wants to do next. The fic is just packed with fresh ideas and connections. It’s intelligent, warm-hearted, and very, very moving. I was blown away by it.

For the art side of things, my favourite has to be the vid Something Good (Will Come From That) by [ profile] sanguinity. This was the absolute highlight of the exchange for most people, I think: technically impressive, witty, funny, joyful. There’s something about seeing Holmes and Watson recreated over and over again--different times, different ages, genders, appearances, the occasional vegetable--that is deeply moving.

Bee Yourself by [ profile] gardnerhill. Elementary. A fantastic (in both senses) concept played absolutely straight. A marvellous adventure.

The Prince-Detective and the Several Types of Beans by ancientreader. Sherlock. A reworking of the Princess and the Pea. Very funny.

The House of Usher by [ profile] saki101. Sherlock (TAB) and ACD. A crossover with The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. So atmospheric.

Good For The Soul by [ profile] hiddenlacuna. ACD. Very dark. Not something I’ll want to go back to and read over and over again but a powerful story, full of new ideas.

And here’s the master list.

I enjoyed being on the inside for [ profile] holmestice for once--being part of the community. It really does make a difference when you’re reading and commenting. I’ve become more aware of other versions of Holmes and Watson and I feel more enthusiastic about trying to write in other ‘verses. I wouldn’t say I had a 100% positive experience but I think I might risk having another go at the exchange in the future. And I’ve been introduced to one new ‘verse in particular: My Dearly Beloved Detective. It’s on YouTube with English subtitles. MDBD is a Russian film from the ‘80s--a comedy with a very British sense of camp, and a rather melancholic depth to it too. In the film’s universe, Holmes and Watson are indeed fictional characters but so many prospective clients keep turning up at 221B Baker Street that two real detectives have been installed there--Shirley Holmes and Jane Watson.

You might remember me mentioning that I might be selling a story. And that did happen--though I don’t know yet when the anthology will be published. It wasn’t professional levels of payment but at least it was payment. I’ve broken my duck. I’ve now got my eye on sending something into Flash Fiction Online. I’ve subscribed to their newsletter for quite a while but never submitted anything.

July will soon be upon us, and with it comes [ profile] watsons_woesJuly Writing Prompts. And I will once again be running off and joining in with Flash Fiction Month on DA. But I’ll be reading and commenting at WW, and hopefully will be joining in at the end for the amnesty prompts. And I thought I’d do weekly links for my DA stories as I go, like last time, in case anyone wants to have a gander.

I was a complete slacker during Holmestice (well, reading/reviewing-wise, at least), so I'm extra-grateful for your list of recs (as well as the reminder that I need to go enjoy your work as well!). And squee squee squee for o-fic publishing and future writing projects!

Thank you for the squee ^_^

There's a great deal of Holmestice stuff worth looking at - but the ones I've recced are a very good starting point I think ^_^

I can see why you might have thought I was your writer, but it appears there are others who share our sense of humour.

I am sorry you didn't get a response from your recipient - having tried to write something specifically designed to appeal to a particular person it is nice to hear something from them.

And congratulations on selling your story. We shall be curtseying before you soon ;)

I was convinced at first that the gift fic must have been written by someone who knew me - however tangentially - because it was so much my sort of humour ^^ And it was a shame I didn't hear from my recipient, but these things happen. Who knows what other things they might have going on in their life?

You mean you're not curtseying already? :P Thanks - it's a small step in the right direction ^_^

Well, you have given me plenty to read when I have the opportunity, and I have commented on Sanguinuity's amazing contribution. Thank you.

Many congratulations on your first sale, and writing progress in general:-)

Oh, I'm sorry I'm just now seeing this, but thank you so much for the lovely rec! It means a lot to know that you enjoyed "Art in the Blood," I thought that maybe not many would read it. I'm so happy it was a favorite, that's delightful! I also second all your other recs (although I did have to skip over bits of 'Good for the Soul,' it was very well written!)

At some point soon I will take a peek at your Flash Fiction stories, they sound like a ton of fun. Good luck with all your writing this month!

You're most welcome about the rec ^_^ Unfortunately, I suppose your fic hasn't got all the attention it deserves because of the rare 'verse. I hope readers keep discovering it - it's such a special piece.

And thank you ^__^
