Just thought I’d do a round-up of what I’ve been up to.

1st April )

Round 5 began over on [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60 yesterday and it appears to be going well. We seem to have preparing for the new round for so long that it’s just nice to be over that hurdle and for things to be back to normal again. And I’m hoping to give [livejournal.com profile] holmes_minor a bit more attention now.

My [livejournal.com profile] heroinebigbang fic has now reached 20,000 words. The whole story is basically there but there are still scenes missing and it needs a lot of work in general. However, I am confident it’s all going to come together.

I’ve also signed up for [livejournal.com profile] intoabar and we all should be receiving our assignments in the next few days. This time I’ve picked Dame Hilda Bracket from Dear Ladies, and my randomly assigned character will be from either Sherlock Holmes (ACD), The Pirates of Penzance or Are You Being Served? I’m presently working through an obsession with Pirates, having discovered the 1983 film version on YouTube. (I can often be found striding home after work singing: “Come friends who plough the sea..!”) I don’t know if it’s permissible to have crushes on entire choruses but I seem to have fallen for the policemen and General Stanley’s daughters, and their respective choreographies. And Are You Being Served? is a sitcom from my childhood. My teenage nephew is a media student, and recently worked as a cameraman on a student recreation of one of the episodes. His enthusiasm made me decide to give the fandom a go. And lots of episodes are available on YouTube so I can refresh my memory.

Last but not least, [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang will be starting posting tomorrow. I have chosen the 10th for my posting date--so very shortly my first long fic and my associate’s accompanying artwork will be making their public debut! (V. excited.)

The engineer has been! The phone line is mended! I'm thrilled to be properly back online! The saga is over and you won't have to listen to me complaining any more! I think I may have overdone the exclamation marks! (I can't seem to stop!) (Oh, no!) (Help!)
scfrankles: knight on horseback with lance lowered (knight)
Just letting you know I'm sort of back online at home.

My phone line is still dead - apparently it "may be a few more days" before it's fixed. (*laughs mildly hysterically* Last time our phone line failed it was weeks before the phone company were able to mend it and they had to dig up the road ^^") However, my brother has lent me a mobile Wi-Fi device to use in the meantime.

It's not unlimited usage, so I may still not be around as much as I usually am. But it will allow me to take part in [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60 on Sunday ^_^ And it's just such a relief to have the option of being able to use the internet at home.

Apologies to my [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60 chums - my home internet connection died Saturday night (currently posting from the library). It should hopefully be mended by Wednesday, when I will catch up fully with my commenting!

Today was the final check-in over at [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang. My very first big bang fic stands at just over 16,000 words and is all ready to be posted next month. I'm pretty excited about that but I'm even more excited over the fact my story was claimed by an artist, so it will be getting accompanying fanart. I have to say that artists for this challenge have been extraordinarily generous - we authors far outnumber them and quite a few artists ended up claiming several fics.

I feel like I'm getting to grips with writing at length now. I wanted to keep pushing myself, so in February I signed up for the "whammy" at [livejournal.com profile] heroinebigbang. That's a 25,000 word minimum. My fic stands at the moment at approximately 7,000 words and has to be 50% finished on 4th May when the rough drafts are due (but I definitely want to be further along than that) and the final version has to be handed in by 30th May. Nobody I know well is doing the challenge, so I wanted to mention it here to make it "real" and make sure I don't chicken out. But I am confident I'm going to have a reasonably well-written, 25,000 word fic done by the end of May. Isn't it odd how quickly you adjust once you start trying things? Not that long ago, 25,000 words would have just seemed impossible to me - now I can view it as: "Well, I know I can write 1,000 words in a day. So 25,000 words is just doing that 25 times."

For both big bangs, I'm writing in the Dear Ladies fandom. A little bit of trivia that might interest some of the people reading this: Hilda and Evadne often refer in their stage and radio shows to old friends and colleagues, and two of these characters, Dodie Bantock and her husband Courtney, appeared in Dear Ladies. Only in two episodes, but they were main characters within those episodes. And Dodie Bantock is played by Rosalie Williams. Who was..? Anyone? Yes - the Granada Mrs. Hudson! When did I finally realise Dodie Bantock was Mrs. Hudson? Only two months ago. The characters are very different and look very different - but that's ridiculous ^^" I'm so taken aback that my fandoms have been overlapping in this way without me noticing.

Just to finish off - as I mentioned in my last post, I'm now the proud co-mod of [livejournal.com profile] holmes_minor and I'm thrilled with how things have been going so far. We've had quite a few people join and some splendid submissions. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the comm develops.

[livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit has been busy doing the proper promotions but I too am happy to announce that I am now the proud co-mod of a brand new comm [livejournal.com profile] holmes_minor.

It's an ACD Sherlock Holmes comm for microfiction and poetry, and everybody is welcome! There's more information in the opening post and on the profile.

While it's still just about the 7th here, I'd like to wish [livejournal.com profile] rachelindeed a happy birthday ^^ Hope you're having a lovely day.

Your writing is always an utter joy - here's to another year full of wonderful stories!
scfrankles: knight on horseback with lance lowered (knight)
A couple of weeks ago we were looking at the first half of The Valley of Fear over on [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60. The novel begins on the 7th of January, which is of course the day after the Epiphany. And incidentally, as you may know, the Epiphany is traditionally held to be Sherlock Holmes' birthday. So I was rummaging around online for things to do with the Epiphany in the Victorian era, and I came across the Epiphany Tart. (The link goes to a website called www.lavenderandlovage.com)

The Epiphany Tart is a jam tart made with up to 13 different jams: the shape of a six pointed star is formed inside a pastry case with more pastry and then all the sections are filled up to make a stained glass window effect. Apparently it was very popular in Victorian times.

I included the tart in a 60 word ficlet and chatted about it with the other comm members - in particular [livejournal.com profile] okapi1895. Who has only gone and made one! Here is the link to her original journal post, and you can also see her tart here on [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60.

And that's not all. I mentioned the tart to [livejournal.com profile] vaysh too - and she's made one as well. You can find it here on her journal.

I'm kind of thrilled ^_^ This is what I love about the internet and making connections with people: I found something and said "isn't this interesting?" and other people agreed and then took it further.

2015 & 2016

scfrankles: knight on horseback with lance lowered (knight)
I’ve been reading [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit and [livejournal.com profile] okapi1895’s posts about their writing in 2015 and their plans for 2016, so I thought I’d have a go at something similar myself.

My total word count for 2015 (including my DeviantArt stuff and my big bang fic which won’t be posted until the spring) isn’t terribly impressive—about 74,500 words. But as Okapi pointed out, I am concentrating on microfiction. So for 2016, I’m not going to worry too much about the final word count. But I do want to write more often and produce more individual works—both fanfiction and original pieces. One thing I’m going to do is go back to writing for [livejournal.com profile] fan_flashworks. I rather let that slide due to work and other writing projects.

And I want to continue to try new things. One thing I definitely want to try this year is writing a novel—something 50,000 words or more. Writing at length is not something that comes naturally to me, but I’ve been greatly heartened by how relatively straightforward writing my fic for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang has been. That’s only 16,000 words but a couple of years ago I would have found that impossible. I’m not sure I’ll try NaNoWriMo. Simply because I’m such a slow writer—I’m not sure I could keep up. Though I don’t know—if it was just a case of getting a very rough first draft out... But I think for me it’s something better spread out over several months. And anyway, I shouldn’t really put off starting—if I want to try, I should just get on with it.

Another important thing I want to try is selling my original work. I’ve come a long way in the last five years or so, and I’m confident about the standard of my work. I get a good reaction from people I don’t know and have no reason to flatter me. And I think I’m also realistic about rejection now—I’m not going to be crushed if a piece isn’t considered suitable. I can’t see myself ever being a full-time professional writer but it would be wonderful if I could get some additional income out of something I’m good at and proud of doing.
scfrankles: knight on horseback with lance lowered (knight)
It’s been a while since I wrote anything in my journal, so I thought I might record what I’ve been up to in my writing.

I recently entered a Hallowe’en competition that is held every year in the DA literature community, and my story House H(a)unting came second. Which I was pretty pleased about - I came third last year. I’m not terribly good at coming up with a traditional scary ghost or horror story but I’ve realised that if I just go with my own normal humorous style, it usually all works out OK. Last year I wrote about an unemployed man being hired as bait for a zombie beetle trap, and someone commented on how light-hearted the piece was ^^

Back in September, I followed [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit’s example and signed up for [livejournal.com profile] smallfandombang - in order to write a Dear Ladies fic. This is my first go at a big bang and it’s going fairly well. I’m onto my second draft, which is currently about 13,500 words. Not a lot for some writers but flaming astounding for me. I have never written anything this long before - I’m learning as I go. But at least the plot is pretty much sorted out, and I’m greatly relieved to find that jokes are starting to pop up naturally now that aspect of the writing process is out of the way. A Dear Ladies fic really ought to be funny ^^

I’ve also signed up for the small gift challenge WAdvent, which is taking place in December over on [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun - I’m really looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with. There are still some unclaimed posting days, and even when they are claimed people will be allowed to double up - so there’s plenty of space if you’re tempted to join in. I will warn you now that for my offering I will be going proudly, with head held high, down the silly route. But I would imagine that by the time the comm gets to me on the 29th, everyone will be too far gone to care ^^

I'm currently taking part in Flash Fiction Month over on dA - writing a piece of microfiction 55-1000 words long every day during July.

I said I'd provide links to the stories, so here's the first five if anyone is interested:

Catty

Plattery Will Get You Nowhere

A Spooky Ghost's Story

Heart's Ease

Judgmental

If you've only time for one, I recommend A Spooky Ghost's Story!

Well, it's 1st July tomorrow, [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes will be starting JWP 2015 and I... have decided to do Flash Fiction Month on dA. I know, I know - I'm a terrible fanfic writer (steady). Scampering off to write original fiction. But I feel I've been neglecting that side of things, and I would like to try FFM again - I had a wonderful time last year. I do wish I could do both challenges though - to be honest, I feel in general more at home on LJ than dA now. Anyway, I'm going to try and do some of the August Amnesty prompts on WW to make up for things, and I'm intending to read all the submissions and cheer everybody else on.

While I'm here, thought I'd do a bit of a round-up as to what I've been up to on LJ lately:

My gift fic has been posted on [livejournal.com profile] acd_holmesfest, and it's astounding ^^ It's called Literary Shortcomings - please go and have a look!

If you're reading my journal, then you're aware that I like microfiction (essentially it floats my boat so much it's a hovercraft). The author of my gift was aware of this too and chose to use a microfiction format - I had never come across it before but apparently it belongs to the [livejournal.com profile] 1sentence comm. A table containing 50 single word prompts was chosen and one sentence was written for each prompt. The sentences were then combined to make an examination of Holmes and Watson's relationship.

All the sentences stand alone, with their prompts as titles, but they take you through the whole of Holmes and Watson's friendship from Watson being wounded to the events of His Last Bow. Some of the sentences are funny, some are moving, some make you think. As I say, they're all separate but as you go from one to the next, the cumulative effect grows. It's really rather powerful.

And the writing is gorgeous. It's like being given a box filled with exquisitely painted miniatures, or tiny, beautiful objects. They are designed to go in one particular order but you can pick them up individually and look at them and study them, or put them together in smaller groups. Fanciful I know, but that is sort of how I feel about the fic - it does feel as though I've been given many little stories, each with its own personality, pictures and colours.

I'm so touched that the author chose to use a microfiction format - it makes the gift feel so personal. I'd been pretty confident that I was going to receive something good in the fest but this is beyond what I was expecting. It really is perfect for me.

I popped into the library today to quickly use the internet. And there were signs up saying that just for 1st April, instead of logging in in the normal way, you should use the words “offline” and “dollypeg”. Ha. Very good. Almost got me there, I thought, as I entered my card number and pin. Which didn’t work, as they were overhauling the system and you had to use “offline and “dollypeg”.

Yes, I’d managed to April Fool myself without any outside input. I put it down to the change to BST. I’ll be OK come October.

So, just thought I’d record my March here:

[livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit kindly wrote me two ficlets in response to requested prompts. The most recent one, Up A Tree, slashes Winnie the Pooh with Piglet, and has Tigger as an accidental voyeur. (No, this isn’t an April Fool.) The other has the anthropomorphised broom cupboard at (the Victorian) 221B Baker Street laying down the rules of how many men should be in the cupboard at any one time, and how they should behave whilst within. (No, again, this isn’t an April Fool.) And I’ll just mention a third—this one wasn’t written for me but I do feel a connection with it, as it is a [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60 canon discussion post written by [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit’s OC Mouselet. She opted to write about The Golden Pince-Nez, concentrating perhaps a little too heavily on her beloved Inspector Hopkins. (Once again, this isn’t… Well, you get the picture.)

Rambling continues... )

Sherlock characters
Hosted on [livejournal.com profile] bbcsherlock.

Just wanted to do one last plug for this fest! It's into the final week now - finishing on 7th March. Please consider having a go - you can find the prompt list here.

February does seem to be have been Microfiction Month for me. I've written two 221Bs, a drabble and a double drabble for the Drabble Fest so far. Just tinkering with submission no. 5, but I'm going to submit it to [livejournal.com profile] fan_flashworks first. (I want to start working towards my Cross-Pollinator badge. *rubs hands together and cackles avariciously*) And I'm hoping to fit in no. 6 before the fest comes to an end.

I've also written a six word story, a 60 word story and a 221B for the [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes Short, Sweet and Whumped challenge. And of course my usual 60s for [livejournal.com profile] sherlock60. All in all it's been bliss. *sighs*

Also, I'm feeling entirely positive about [livejournal.com profile] acd_holmesfest. Obviously can't go into details but I'm happy and comfortable with my assignment, I've booked my beta, I've put together a thorough 1,000 word plan, and I've got a title. Small matter now of actually writing it, but I think I know what I'm doing ^^
