Writing Update

Well, as my sister likes to put it, I have just handed in my homework to the
holmestice mods. I’m pretty happy with my fic and I’m looking forward to seeing what my recipient thinks of it. I’m also pretty excited about finding out what my gift fic is going to be like. Posting will begin on 1st June and runs to the 14th.
I’ve also finally completed my
heroinebigbang fic. It’s about 26,500 words long. My sister is currently reading it, just for (alleged) pleasure at the moment, though she is doing a bit of informal beta-ing as she goes. So far I have called the vicar’s wife Clarissa instead of Cressida, demonstrated a tendency to drop the pronoun “you” from questions, and teamed a shawl with a chiffon scarf—which is apparently “too much”. (The scarf is being replaced by a hat.) I am determined to get the wretched thing posted sometime in the first half of June, and then I can start thinking about writing something 50,000 words long. (^^”)
And in other writing news… I think I might be in the process of selling my first story. It’s for an anthology being produced by a (self-proclaimed) tiny publisher. It wouldn’t be much money but I’m very pleased—it’s a start. I’ll bang on about it in more detail if/when it actually happens.
To finish, a personal update: my sister is nobly fixing the results of years of water damage at the back of the kitchen sink, so we’re having to do the washing up in the bath. Not actually in the bath—in a plastic washing up bowl. But still—in the bath.

Date: 2016-05-24 02:12 pm (UTC)I really recommend following Holmestice - there are always some wonderful writers taking part. I've found even if you're not familiar with the particular Holmesian fandoms, you can still enjoy the fics. But I really wouldn't expect you to read my 26,500 word gen Dear Ladies fic :P Though I would be thrilled if you did ^^
My story for the anthology is actually already online. I was surprised anyone would be interested in it. (In fact I was suspicious at first because someone was taking an interest in it. However, I've checked and the publisher is definitely kosher.) But the publisher would only claim the right to publish my story in the anthology - as far as I can tell, I wouldn't even have to remove it from the internet. If you'd like to have a look at it, it's here (http://scfrankles.deviantart.com/art/Plattery-Will-Get-You-Nowhere-543634005).
And my sister seems relatively confident about the sink ^_^

Date: 2016-05-24 03:38 pm (UTC)Well done re handing in homework, I may well have a peep at the holmestice entries ...as you say, a lot of talent out there. Please let me know when the heroinebigbang fic is posted and where.
And that's great re first steps with publishing...really pleased for you...have had a peep on DA at the fic...great images in words...splendid, in fact...cheering you on your way:-)
All the very best with the washing up situation, too.

Date: 2016-05-24 04:13 pm (UTC)Oh, please do have a look at the holmestice submissions (not all fics, of course). I really enjoyed them last time. The heroinebigbang fic will be on AO3 eventually - the formal big bang event on the LJ comm won't be happening unfortunately.
Thank you for your support over the publishing thing ^_^ If it happens, it'll be something for my literary CV, as it were. I'm rather reassured that someone has looked at my work and found it commercially viable (for want of a better phrase). I know I can write well and be entertaining, but I also know my work can be a bit odd.
I believe my sister is heading out for chips from the local chip shop for tea. Just to help limit the washing up, you understand. (^^")

Date: 2016-05-24 05:12 pm (UTC)I will keep an eye out...as you know, I am not one for the explicit end of the fic scale, but there are plenty of different styles and content rating:-)
Interested to see where this publishing lark will take you...a toe in the water to start with...your writing adapts well to the world outside fan fiction, and I think there is a much wider audience for you out there. Go find it!
I think I can match you in the "my work is a bit odd" contest:-p
Yep...chips...entirely reasonable solution, the only practical option:-p

Date: 2016-05-26 09:40 pm (UTC)How's the kitchen sink repair coming on? One year the daughter did a placement and lived in a caravan, which had no running water. We used to pick her up at the weekend and she'd bring her washing up home in a bowl.

Date: 2016-05-26 10:02 pm (UTC)*sighs* This is why it's such a good idea to have a beta. I knew the vicar's wife was called Cressida, but I'd put down Clarissa (twice!) and just hadn't realised. And my sister is very handy for fashion tips for elderly ladies and what have you. Clothes just go over my head. If you see what I mean.
The sink repair is proving a little more awkward than at first appeared ^^" My sister is going to attack it from another angle. There's no problem with the plumbing, btw - it's just a repair to the sill behind. But we can't use the sink while the layers of filler are drying out. At least we do still have running water - we're just becoming rather fed up having to carry everything up to the bathroom ^^"
We used to pick her up at the weekend and she'd bring her washing up home in a bowl. I've heard of students bringing their laundry home but that is a new one on me ^_^
