A Fool Every Day
Apr. 1st, 2015 11:06 pmI popped into the library today to quickly use the internet. And there were signs up saying that just for 1st April, instead of logging in in the normal way, you should use the words “offline” and “dollypeg”. Ha. Very good. Almost got me there, I thought, as I entered my card number and pin. Which didn’t work, as they were overhauling the system and you had to use “offline and “dollypeg”.
Yes, I’d managed to April Fool myself without any outside input. I put it down to the change to BST. I’ll be OK come October.
So, just thought I’d record my March here:
thesmallhobbit kindly wrote me two ficlets in response to requested prompts. The most recent one, Up A Tree, slashes Winnie the Pooh with Piglet, and has Tigger as an accidental voyeur. (No, this isn’t an April Fool.) The other has the anthropomorphised broom cupboard at (the Victorian) 221B Baker Street laying down the rules of how many men should be in the cupboard at any one time, and how they should behave whilst within. (No, again, this isn’t an April Fool.) And I’ll just mention a third—this one wasn’t written for me but I do feel a connection with it, as it is a
sherlock60 canon discussion post written by
thesmallhobbit’s OC Mouselet. She opted to write about The Golden Pince-Nez, concentrating perhaps a little too heavily on her beloved Inspector Hopkins. (Once again, this isn’t… Well, you get the picture.)
The Drabble Fest over on
bbcsherlock ended on the 7th March. I wrote a total of seven drabbles for that, which I was pleased about. And I’m looking forward to the fest coming round again in the autumn. There was a decent turn out for the first one, but here's hoping even more people take part next time.
I’m also looking forward to
acd_holmesfest beginning posting at the end of this month. My story is written, betaed, edited, had its header added, and I’ve even typed up the HTML tags. I’m feeling pretty smug—no nervous breakdowns this time. Well, maybe a little one when I got my fic back from my long-suffering beta. I now know if you’re opening a file using a Chromebook, you have to save it as a Google Doc before you can see the comments… Well, you live and learn. (And annoy your beta.)
I also signed up for
intoabar last month. (There’s still time to sign up yourself: you’ve got until the 5th.) As it’s my first go, I’m playing a rather cautious game this time, and have only put down one possible fandom. So my chosen character, Dr. Evadne Hinge of Hinge & Bracket/Dear Ladies fame (*everyone under 40 and all non-Britons look puzzled*) will be meeting up with an ACD Sherlock Holmes character. I’ve got a basic idea for how the two of them can meet and now I’m just waiting for my assignment, so I can think about specifics. Keeping my fingers crossed I’m not going to get a villain (let’s not mention the “M” word, shall we?) but I am psychologically prepared for this possibility. And to be honest, I think a villain might bring out the best in Dr. Hinge.
I believe
intoabar now runs annually, and I plan to be able to confidently offer the full four fandoms next time it rolls round. I must try and expand my repertoire a bit.
Couple of things to finish off:
sherlock60 has just hit 100 members! I know it’s just a number and we’ll probably be going back down again soon, but I’m pleased. It feels like an achievement.
And also, I’ve finally changed my journal style, going from dark blue to… dark blue. But I think the new skin is so elegant. (I keep admiring it and thinking how pretty it is—like Mouselet about Hopkins. Though she probably doesn't keep worrying if she's got his font the right size.)

Date: 2015-04-02 12:20 am (UTC)Good luck with the intoabar. Maybe Evadne will meet Hopkins, though Irene seems most likely. But not, alas, Mouselet.

Date: 2015-04-02 09:43 pm (UTC)And thanks ^^ You know, I hadn't considered Evadne meeting Hopkins. And I think the character is chosen from a list of about 20, so Hopkins may indeed be a possibility. I'm really keen to find out now ^^

Date: 2015-04-02 07:53 am (UTC)Your beta is quite happy to cope with your moderate requests, considering how much you do in return - especially with fandoms you don't have a clue about.
I'm impressed with the 100 members - shows how much work you've been putting into the comm.

Date: 2015-04-02 10:10 pm (UTC)And I know I do the regular weekly posting at Sherlock60, but please be assured I do appreciate all your great ideas and your efforts with the comm - it was your promotional work that attracted most of our recent members.
