Bits and Bobs
Apr. 4th, 2016 04:10 pmJust thought I’d do a round-up of what I’ve been up to.
I had rather a strange 1st April. I was happily enjoying a day-off when the phone rang just after midday. My sister answered it and it turned out to be one of the supervisors, who said I was down on the rota to come in at 12. He did reassure me it wasn’t my fault--the manager had changed the rota since I’d last seen it (and the rota is very handily kept locked up in the office, so you have to ask to see it). It was actually an extra shift I’d been given but I misunderstood and thought my days had been swapped.
So, I got changed quickly and catapulted myself towards the bus stop. It’s a 25 minute walk to the bus stop (faster if you’re striding along, cursing blameless managers for changing your shifts and taking a couple of hours away from you) and as I went I suddenly wondered if it had been an trick. Insane I know, but I was relieved to reach work and not have anyone jumping out yelling, “April Fool!”
However, my supervisor did stop me and warn me there were a couple of pigeons flying about in the warehouse upstairs. Slightly taken aback, off I went upstairs to put my stuff in the staffroom. Not a sign of a pigeon. Damn, I thought. He got me there. Back down to the shop floor and I tentatively asked him if it had been an April Fool. He looked a bit bemused and showed me a picture on his phone of the pigeons.
The female supervisor then told me that the male supervisor had been a bit puzzled when he’d phoned me and spoken to my sister. My sister and I are unmistakably siblings and sound identical on the phone. From my supervisor’s point of view, he’d spoken to “me” and then “I’d” gone to fetch myself. So he hadn’t been entirely sure if I was playing a trick on him.
And then the female supervisor told me that my shirt was on inside out… And it was. I’d changed into it, but whipped it off again to brush my teeth (you may ask if it’s necessary to brush your teeth shirtless. The way I do it--yes, it is) and put it back on inside out without noticing.
So it was a full day and I’d like to start a campaign here to have April Fool’s Day abolished.
Round 5 began over on
sherlock60 yesterday and it appears to be going well. We seem to have preparing for the new round for so long that it’s just nice to be over that hurdle and for things to be back to normal again. And I’m hoping to give
holmes_minor a bit more attention now.
My
heroinebigbang fic has now reached 20,000 words. The whole story is basically there but there are still scenes missing and it needs a lot of work in general. However, I am confident it’s all going to come together.
I’ve also signed up for
intoabar and we all should be receiving our assignments in the next few days. This time I’ve picked Dame Hilda Bracket from Dear Ladies, and my randomly assigned character will be from either Sherlock Holmes (ACD), The Pirates of Penzance or Are You Being Served? I’m presently working through an obsession with Pirates, having discovered the 1983 film version on YouTube. (I can often be found striding home after work singing: “Come friends who plough the sea..!”) I don’t know if it’s permissible to have crushes on entire choruses but I seem to have fallen for the policemen and General Stanley’s daughters, and their respective choreographies. And Are You Being Served? is a sitcom from my childhood. My teenage nephew is a media student, and recently worked as a cameraman on a student recreation of one of the episodes. His enthusiasm made me decide to give the fandom a go. And lots of episodes are available on YouTube so I can refresh my memory.
Last but not least,
smallfandombang will be starting posting tomorrow. I have chosen the 10th for my posting date--so very shortly my first long fic and my associate’s accompanying artwork will be making their public debut! (V. excited.)
